The light is most of the time used as a goal, a representation of freedom and how to escape from the condition of the character:
Since the beginning Berni feel like a prisonner. To make that feeling stronger, the light is most of the time coming from outside: Like if he's prisonner of himself.
For that reason He buys a woman: He expects to be free by puting that woman in jail .
But at the end we discover the only way he got is a labyrinthe (the only bright way to escape) like the mouse of the beginning.
